As a resident and proud owner of a photography studio situated on Main Street in New Market, it is fair to say that I just love this cute little town. When I was asked to photograph the Town of New Market to update their website, I was thrilled!

Located in the heart of Maryland, this enchanting town is steeped in a wealth of captivating history that dates back to the early 1800s. Initially serving as a strategic stopping point for weary travelers en route to Baltimore and Cumberland, it evolved into a haven for antique enthusiasts, earning the well-deserved title of the "Antique Capital of Maryland." Its lovingly preserved charm is a testament to its bygone era's enduring allure.

Despite its continued status as a thoroughfare, New Market preserves its tranquility as a quaint downtown district. Whether it is the vibrant blossoms of spring, the sun-drenched days of summer, the captivating colors of fall, or the serene blanket of winter, New Market boasts an unmatchable level of picturesque beauty throughout the year.

It is worth noting some of the properties here in New Market and their amazing history. In 1793, the first 19 lots were sold, which was the start of the old Smith Tavern (which you can read more about HERE and is currently for sale!). Isn’t it beautiful?

In the 1800s, New Market housed many hotels. Among them was the esteemed Utz Hotel, which eventually transitioned into the acclaimed Mealy's establishment. Today, the renowned heritage lives on as the iconic Vintage restaurant, preserving this treasured locale's rich history and allure.

From indulging in shopping experiences to savoring delectable culinary delights, there is something for everyone in this vibrant town. Whether you relish taking a leisurely walk through the charming streets of our town, basking in the natural landscapes that surround us, or delighting in the rich tapestry of historical tales that are waiting to be discovered, there is genuinely something that appeals to every individual's unique interests and preferences within the enchanting confines of New Market.

New Market has become a thriving destination offering an extensive range of activities and attractions for visitors, including their annual events such as Christmas in New Market, New Market Strong 5k, and their South Alley Block Party.

New Market boasts a community park where families can enjoy outdoor recreation and create lasting memories. Also pictured, New Market has two community churches, The Hill Chapel and Simpson Community Church. Lastly, another town landmark to note is the New Market Grange. This esteemed institution has a rich history, dating back to its inception in 1867 and official chartering in 1920. Conceived initially as a clandestine society of farmers, the Grange has since evolved into a dynamic service organization catering to diverse subjects and passions that extend well beyond agriculture. In addition to its multifaceted pursuits, the Grange provides rental options for individuals seeking a venue for their celebrations and gatherings.

Here is my little piece of history. Though this building was not created until the 1980s, the property we own on Main Street was built in 1802. Like most other properties on Main St, our home used to be several businesses, including an antique shop.

In 2018, I renovated this humble structure into my dream photography studio. Previously a woodworking shed, it underwent a complete renovation (including running water and central air) and emerged as this one-of-a-kind space. Soon, I will share a blog post with before and after photos, allowing you to witness the journey firsthand. In the meantime, enjoy a tour here.
