Newborn Luke: An Early Surprise

Working with newborns requires a bit of flexibility before, during, and even after the photoshoot.  Take little Luke, for example.  When he decided to come 3 weeks early—much to Mom and Dad’s delight—we quickly moved things around to welcome him at the JNP Studio.  He surprised everyone at 37 weeks, but fortunately, made his debut as a healthy, happy newborn!

Just 13 days after his early birth date, Luke made the drive from Sykesville, Maryland to our studio.  He weighed a whopping 6 lbs. 3 oz and settled into each pose perfectly.  His sleepy temperament made him one of my most cooperative newborns to date.  But Mom and Dad assured me that was right on schedule.  Apparently, he preferred to sleep during the day and wake them up at night.  Ah, the joys of parenting!

In between takes, I chatted with the new parents to see how they were adjusting to life with Luke.  Although they seemed a little tired, their joy and love for him was absolutely infectious.  After spending just a few hours with him, watching the way he tucked his knees in and performed these sleepy sit-ups, I couldn’t help but echo their sentiments.  He was a lot stronger than any adorable newborn should be!  Plus, just look at those little feet.

Luke transitioned well from shot to shot, but some of my favorites from the day came at the very end.  As a finale of sorts, we captured a bunch of moments with Mom and Dad.  To be honest, I didn’t have to do much to showcase this beautiful family of three.  The family portraits and mother-baby photos occurred quite naturally as they interacted with one another.
