Thinking Outside the Box for Headshots

I know what you’re thinking—Jessica Neumann Photography does headshots?!  While it’s not what people first think of when they picture JNP, it’s actually one of my favorite services to provide.  Especially when I get to work with clients like this local professional.  If you read my pre-Thanksgiving Day blog, then you’ve heard of the Finan family, who’s been working with me annually since 2014.  Normally, I have the honor of photographing the entire family.  But when Mom asked me to take some unique headshots, I immediately jumped at the chance to do something different.

It was great spending the time to really highlight her in a professional manner.  She came to the JNP Studio in downtown New Market with wardrobe in tow.  Although the weather was still warm and muggy—even in September—we tried to create a variety of textures and backgrounds within one central location.  Going above and beyond the basic gray that you typically see in headshots.

However, I can’t take credit for all the color.  She styled herself for this studio session, choosing tones that really made her eyes pop.  Even in the black-and-white images!  Her expressions may have had something to do with that, though.  Before the official photoshoot, we met and discussed what she wanted to convey with these headshots.  Naturally, key words like “confident” and “professional” came up, but she wasn’t really looking for the standard customer service smile you often see in these portraits.

Because we had worked together so many times before, she was really able to relax in front of the camera.  Giving authentic looks that transformed her headshots into something extraordinary.  I was just happy to give Mom that solo attention that many don’t receive outside of their maternity sessions.  Next time you’re looking for a local photographer in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, keep JNP in mind!  We capture portraits and spontaneous shots for newborns, children, families, parents, and more.  Contact us today to discuss your options.
