This was a unique session because this newborn client was on the older side of my “newborn sessions.” This family contacted me because they wanted a newborn session for their three-month-old son. I typically photograph newborns in their first two weeks of life, but I have successfully photographed older newborns many times before.

Photographing older babies requires a different mindset since they have started to form their little personalities. Some babies may be smiling by this age, sleep less, and might not enjoy being swaddled like a typical newborn usually does. There are some “pros,” however, to photographing older newborns. A few examples are: their skin is beautiful! By 3 months old, the newborn acne has come and gone; they have most likely put on a little weight, which makes their cherub faces that much cuter, and they are alert and more content to be awake. Thus, photographing their interactions with the family is truly priceless.

They don’t call me the baby whisperer for nothing. We were able to swaddle and soothe this little dude for long enough to get several sleepy shots in before it was time for him to wake up again. This family brought in props that they wanted to incorporate into their session. Dad is a chef, so they brought the fresh produce, and we brought their vision to life.

It wasn’t very long before this family returned to JNP. This time, it was to celebrate Mom! 40 and fabulous! One of my favorite types of sessions is when women come in wanting to celebrate another trip around the sun. I have photographed milestones for babies for over 14 years! Who says moms can’t indulge in a luxurious photo session to celebrate themselves? Certainly not me!
